During the filming of Ladder 49, John Travolta developed friendships with Baltimore firefighters.Aware that they were often exposed to toxic materials, he decided to bring the detoxification program to Baltimore.

With his support, a pilot project was launched in partnership with fire department officials. The pilot established the need for the program in the Baltimore area, and its value in resolving health problems experienced by firefighters.

To assist firefighters on an ongoing basis, a facility was established in the heart of a corridor of military bases, proving grounds, training camps, military schools and veterans hospitals.

This facility provided services to scores of local firefighters, police and veterans on a humanitarian basis, at no cost, and provided detoxification program delivery to a team of researchers examining the benefits of detoxification for veterans.
